Los Carpinteros is a collective founded in 1991 in Havana.

Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés, was born on September 18, 1971 in Camaguey, Cuba and graduated in 1994 from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Havana, Cuba.

Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez, was born on March 6, 1969 in Caibarién, Las Villas, Cuba and graduated in 1994 from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Havana, Cuba.

Alexandre Arrechea Jesus Zambrano, was born on September 12, 1970 in Trinidad, Las Villas, Cuba and graduated in 1994 from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Havana, Cuba. He was part of the group until 2003.

Los Carpinteros live and work in Havana and Madrid.

Watertower by Tom Fruin, DUMBO

Watertower, a sculptural artwork by Brooklyn artist Tom Fruin is situated on the rooftop of 20 Jay Street. In place until June 2013, it can be  viewed from the parks and streets of Dumbo, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, FDR Drive and Lower Manhattan.

Inspiration ~ "Discarded" Art by Sayaka Kajita Ganz

Japanese born artist Sayaka Kajita Ganz creates sculptures from reclaimed plastic. This piece, called Emergence (2008) is an installation of two separate sculptures called Night (black) and Wind (white).
"My working process is reminiscent of my experiences growing up in several different countries, of being disconnected from the place I was born. Then, I began searching for a new community where I truly belong. I find discarded objects from peoples’ houses and give them a second life, a new home. For my sculptures I use plastic utensils, toys and metal pieces among other things. I only select objects that have been used and discarded. The human history behind these objects gives them life in my eyes. My goal is for each object to transcend its origins by being integrated into an animal form that seems alive. This process of reclamation and regeneration is liberating to me as an artist.
By building these sculptures I try to understand the human relationships that surround me. It is a way for me to contemplate and remind myself that even if there is conflict right now, there is a way for all the pieces to fit together. That even if some people don’t feel at home here and now, there is a place where they belong and that they will eventually find it." I would love to see these in person!
