I've Decided ~ This IS Worth the Tree Pollen Allergies!

The city is talking about planting hypo-allergenic trees and I don't have a problem with that. I wonder whether the hypo-allergenic trees will produce the bursts of soft Spring blossoms like these old trees do. I'm just sayin'.

Another Sunday in the Park With(out) George

Who needs George? This is what Central Park looked like today, the first full day of Spring 2010. Just two weeks ago, there was 20" of fresh snow on the ground in the park. But today...the early Spring bulbs are blooming. It never ceases to amaze me how you can always find a place in the park where you can pretend you are the only human inhabitant of NYC for a brief moment of time.

One Step Forward and Two Steps Back

It took a while but Spring has finally reached NYC. You know it when the street trees begin to blossom. These are hearty trees that manage to survive pollution and traffic and animals and weather. The trees right outside my window were totally bare until one week ago and look at them now.

As my husband and I were returning from the Upper West Side last night we drove past the 2nd Ave. subway construction which currently is in full swing between 96th and 92nd Streets. To make way for the huge cranes and bulldozers that take up several traffic lanes, they have cut into the sidewalks, reducing their size by half and removing all the street trees!

I was inspired by Nichole at little brown pen who always has beautiful photographs of streets, shops and "everyday" things, first from Paris and now from Pennsylvania, posted on her blog. I decided to take a lesson from her... that beauty is in the eye of the beholder....and that if you look for it, you will find it. Granted, I am not the photographer Nicole is and I may have to look a bit harder in parts of NYC than she did in Paris...but it's true, you can find beauty anywhere if you're looking for it.
For example:
The Friends Meeting House, off Stuyvesant Square Park, is a beautiful red brick building built in 1860 by the Hicksites, a group of Quakers who separated from the main congregation to pursue more traditional forms of worship.

Sunday in the Park Without George

Don't know where George was, but we took a walk into Central Park today. The crocuses are up and with a few more 50 degree days in a row, the forsythia will be out and the trees will be blooming. Can't wait. The city needs Spring more than usual this year!
