Another Hidden NYC Gem

Did you know that there is a National Park that you can get to by subway? You actually have to take the subway and then a bus from the subway to get to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (part of the Gateway National Recreation Area) in Queens but it is one of those amazing, peaceful places seemingly plunked down in the middle of the typical NYC chaos.

It was a grey day yesterday and we should have gone earlier if we wanted to see more birds but it was still a beautiful, quiet place with amazing views of Manhattan and Brooklyn. There is a guided walk along a flat gravel path that took us around the West Pond with many ducks, swans and a few snowy egrets on view. You can borrow binoculars from the friendly, knowledgeable staff at the Visitor's Center.
