Alvin Ailey Dance Center - 9th Avenue & 55th St.

The fairly new NYC building that houses the Alvin Ailey Dance Company is one of the few modern examples of city architecture that fits both its surroundings and its purpose. A corner property, it is not overwhelmingly large or tall but it is covered in floor to ceiling windows on the two sides facing the street. The building contains several dance studios where classes of all kinds and for all ages are given at all times of the day and night. Part of the fun of attending a dance performance in the lovely Joan Weill theater (on the basement level) is arriving early and watching those classes although it's also one of the reasons I have never taken classes there myself! Last night, a class had just ended when we arrived.
